First UK CubeSat with laser optical communications technology


An early connection made between Northumbria University and the region’s space community through our then newly introduced monthly Cascade & Network event in 2020 was the beginning of a series of engagement and projects attracting funding of a total of £1m which ultimately led to this project.

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Northumbria University, alongside esteemed partners Durham University, e2E Group, and SMS Electronics, secured a prestigious £5 million grant from the UK Space Agency in July 2023. This visionary endeavour marks the inception of the United Kingdom's inaugural university-led multi-satellite space mission.


The seeds of this monumental achievement were sown in 2020 when Northumbria University initiated the monthly Cascade & Network event.
