A Government decision on Lockheed Martin's proposed £85 million satellite manufacturing facility at NETPark in County Durham is expected in the coming weeks, marking a potentially significant milestone for the North East's growing space sector.

The proposed development, which could create around 500 highly skilled jobs in the North East and support up to 2,000 jobs across the wider economy, has been highlighted in recent media coverage following an update from global aerospace and defence company Lockheed Martin.

Speaking to regional business publication Bdaily, Chris Spicer, Lockheed Martin Space's Regional Director for the UK and Europe, reaffirmed the company's commitment to the North East and confirmed that initial groundworks are already underway at NETPark in Sedgefield.

The company is awaiting a Government decision, expected before Christmas, on plans to establish a satellite Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) facility that would strengthen the UK's sovereign space capabilities.

The proposed investment would represent a major opportunity for the North East, building on the region's established expertise in space technology, advanced manufacturing and satellite communications.

Working together to support investment and growth

Space North East England (SNEE), the region's space cluster, has been working closely with Lockheed Martin and regional partners to help bring the proposals forward, connecting organisations, championing regional capabilities and supporting opportunities for investment and collaboration.

The progress reflects the strength of partnership working across the North East and the growing recognition of the region as a location for major space industry investment.

NETPark, managed by Business Durham, is already home to a thriving community of science and technology businesses, including a number of SNEE members operating at the forefront of satellite communications, advanced electronics and space technology.

The park's recent £100 million expansion has further strengthened its ability to accommodate growing technology businesses and attract international investment.

The proposed Lockheed Martin facility would build on this established innovation ecosystem, creating new opportunities for regional businesses to contribute to major space programmes, develop their capabilities and access new markets.

Building on the success of the North East space sector

The latest developments come as the North East continues to establish itself as an important centre for space innovation, research and advanced manufacturing.

SNEE members are already delivering innovative technologies and services across satellite communications, electronics, photonics, advanced materials, data applications and specialist engineering.

Companies such as Filtronic and aXenic, based at NETPark, demonstrate the strength of the region's existing capabilities and the contribution North East businesses are making to the international space industry.

SNEE works with businesses, universities and research organisations to strengthen this ecosystem, helping companies make connections, access opportunities and develop the partnerships needed to grow.

The potential arrival of a major satellite manufacturing facility would provide further opportunities for regional supply chains, skills development and collaboration, complementing the excellent work already being delivered by SNEE members.

A growing commitment to the North East

Lockheed Martin's proposed investment at NETPark forms part of its wider commitment to the region, which includes its partnership with Northumbria University and the UK Space Agency on the £50 million North East Space Skills and Technology Centre (NESST).

The Newcastle-based centre will bring together academic research, industry expertise and skills development, helping to support the next generation of space technologies and professionals.

Together, these projects demonstrate the scale of opportunity developing across the North East, from research and innovation to satellite manufacturing, commercialisation and international growth.

With a Government decision on the NETPark proposals anticipated in the coming weeks, SNEE will continue working with Lockheed Martin, its members and regional partners to champion the North East's space capabilities and support investment that creates long-term opportunities for the sector.

The proposed facility represents another significant opportunity to build on the region's achievements and further establish the North East as a leading UK location for space innovation and technology.
