Space weather can have a significant impact on satellites, but understanding exactly what a solar storm means for an individual spacecraft remains a challenge.
This is the problem that led to the creation of CosmicAegis, an AI-powered space weather intelligence company developing tools to help satellite operators prepare for incoming solar storms.
The story behind CosmicAegis
The idea for CosmicAegis was sparked by an event in February 2022, when SpaceX lost 38 of 49 newly launched Starlink satellites following a geomagnetic storm that had been officially classified as mild.
For CosmicAegis, the incident highlighted a wider gap in satellite-specific space weather intelligence. Rather than simply providing general storm alerts, the company set out to develop technology that could help satellite operators understand what an incoming storm could mean for their specific spacecraft.
Turning forecasts into actionable intelligence
CosmicAegis is developing an AI-powered platform that uses live data from NASA, NOAA and GFZ Potsdam to forecast the timing and severity of space weather events.
The platform then uses a satellite-specific digital twin to translate this information into guidance tailored to an individual spacecraft. This includes forecasting potential altitude loss, fuel costs and recommended action before a storm arrives.
The company's core AI forecasting model has recently been retrained and validated against real historical storm data, with strong results, marking an important step forward in its research and development.
Building momentum
CosmicAegis has achieved several milestones as it continues to develop its technology and grow its connections across the space sector.
The company was recently selected for the UK Space Agency Leo Accelerator 2026 and was the unanimous winner of the Datalyst 2026 startup pitch competition.
It also represented CosmicAegis as part of the UK Space Agency delegation at the Farnborough International Airshow, where the team made a number of new industry connections.
Alongside these achievements, CosmicAegis recently secured a START UP Grant from Newcastle University, supporting the company's continued development.
The team is also growing, with a Cloud Engineering Intern set to join shortly through Newcastle University's placement programme.
With continued progress in its AI forecasting model, new funding and accelerator opportunities, and growing connections across the space sector, CosmicAegis is continuing to develop its approach to satellite-specific space weather intelligence.
