About the event
Our monthly chance for the North East space community and others to find out the latest news, hear interesting experiences from our speakers and network with each other.
This month, we have two very different speakers; one on a slightly unusual space related topic but very interesting!
Dr Michael Mulvihill – Vice-Chancellor Research Fellow, Teesside University
Fylingdales Archive and social history of space surveillance
Michael has been working with RAF Fylingdales and UK Space Command to charts 60 years of space surveillance in the North East of England. The work presents a social, cultural and historic perspective of RAF Fylingdales, a crucial strategic and geopolitical site, which tracks about 70% of objects in orbit. As of April last year their online portal has been visited by 300,000 individuals from around the world, and they have had impact upon UK Space Command, US Space Force and decision-making organisations such as RUSI's UK Projects on Nuclear Issues. An interesting insight into space surveillance – a burgeoning opportunity in the sector!
