About the event
Are you a cyber security company, professional or academic looking to explore a new sector? Or a space company looking to integrate cybersecurity as part of your offer? Why not come along to our TechNExt fringe event delving into all things cyber in space.
Space is a fast-growing sector with reliance increasing on satellites for communication, security, intelligence, and business. Cybercrime against space systems is becoming more apparent and the increase in the volume of data arriving from satellites has sparked concerns about the security of data transport and storage between satellites and ground systems.
Space North East England in collaboration with CyberNorth will host a TechNExt fringe helping companies to explore this exciting sector with the opportunity to hear from experts in this field.
Speakers include:
Dr Biju Issac is an Associate Professor and Head of Subject (Networks and Cyber Security) at Northumbria University. He is the Director of the Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR). The NCSC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) jointly recognise ACE-CSR.
Biju will present some of the cyber security research projects him and his team have undertaken, and the future focuses of this group and the University. He will also share on the project they recently completed with Lockheed Martin Space (USA).
Yuri Andersson, Executive Director – Angoka Ltd. ANGOKA is IoT Security Company that protects connected device communication for Smart Cities and Smart Mobility. Their hardware-based solution represents a complete paradigm shift in traditional approaches to cybersecurity.
Yuri will discuss opportunities and experiences of working within the space sector and some of the challenges faced by SME’s getting into this sector in Cyber Security.
Dr Sharon Lemac-Vincere - an interdisciplinary academic at Strathclyde University and a visiting academic at the International Space University. She specialises in ‘Space Entrepreneurship’ and ‘Cyber Security in the Commercial Space Sector’ and her work engages with early-stage technology, secure by design principles and data visualisation.
Pivoting into the Space Sector: Understanding Cybersecurity Threats:
As SMEs and startups venture into the rapidly expanding space sector, it’s essential to grasp the cybersecurity risks. This 60-minute workshop will introduce participants to the types of malicious actors targeting space-related enterprises. We’ll discuss state-sponsored hackers looking to disrupt or gain strategic advantages, cybercriminals who exploit vulnerabilities for financial gain, and insider threats from employees or contractors. By understanding these threats, businesses can start developing strategies to protect their innovations and sensitive data, ensuring a safer transition into the space industry.
